51st Annual Cultural Competition

It’s now your chance to bring out your excellence is recitation, essay writing, elocution, quiz and debate at the 51st Annual Cultural Competition conducted by Ramakrishna Mission Shillong.

The programme is for the students of Meghalaya - from nursery to the college level. It aims to provide the budding youth a platform to show-case their talent and instil confidence in them.

There is no entry fee for the Cultural Competition, but you can always extend your helping hand for the future citizens of India!

RULES OF THE 51ST CULTURAL COMPETITION - 2025

  • General Information

    1. Form to be submitted online only . Forms can also be submitted through Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Quinton Road, with effect from 10th June 2025 onwards.
    2. For online enrolment and downloading of pieces please visit our website acc.rkmshillong.org
    3. Pre – KG should be marked as Nursery (if equivalent), otherwise it shall be treated as KG.
    4. Competitors of Group ‘G’ (KG) and Group ‘H’ (Nursery) may recite any nursery rhyme of his/her choice. Competitors from class – I (one) onwards will recite selected poem, which can be downloaded from the website acc.rkmshillong.org
    5. Participants are not allowed to recite in more than two language.
    6. Candidate should not make any Personal Introduction before any performance during the competition.
    7. For Sanskrit Recitation, Chanting/Singing in tune shall not be allowed.
    8. For Essay Competition, the length of the essay will be limited to not more than One Thousand words.
    9. For Vocal music competiton Competitor must sing from selected songs ( available in the website), in 4 (four) minutes. Accompaniment should be restricted to Harmonium, Tabla, Hand-held cymbals (Mandira) and Tanpura. No accompanist shall be made available by the organizer. In Open group anyone of any age can join.
    10. For Drawing Competition, Participants should bring all drawing materials except drawing paper, which will be supplied by the organizers.
    11. Medium for ‘Sit & Draw’ for groups I & II (i.e. Nursery & KG) is Crayons / Colour Penclis.
    12. Medium for ‘Sit & Draw’ for groups III & IV (i.e. from class I to Class IV) can be Crayon / Pencil / Pen / Charcoal. (Pastels and water colour is not Allowed).
    13. Participants of Group I to Group IV can draw as they like.
    14. For ‘Sit & Draw’ Group V (Class V & VI). Medium: Crayon/ Pencil/ Pen / Charcoal / Pastels. Specific topic shall be given on the spot from the following:
      1. Rural Livelihood.
      2. A market place.
      3. My little kitchen garden.
    15. For ‘Sit & Draw’ Groups VI & VII (i.e. from class VII to X) Medium: Pencil / Pen / Pastels / Charcoal / Watercolor. Specific topic shall be given on the spot from the following:
        Group VI (VII & VIII)
      1. Sunset from Shillong Peak.
      2. "Save Nature, Save Future" - Visualize Earth before and after deforestation or pollution.
      3. One India many Indians.
        Group VII (IX & X)
      1. "Connected Digitally, Disconnected Emotionally" - Show a family sitting together but all are on phones, not talking.
      2. "Meghalaya - Where the Earth Meets the Sky" - A poetic landscape with clouds rolling over green valleys, waterfalls, and sacred forests.
      3. Heritage to Be Preserved - Monuments under threat.
    16. Competitors are to submit their names in pairs for Debate and Quiz competition. For Debate Competition, one from the team will have to speak ‘for’ and another ‘against’ the Motion.
    17. Specific date of the compition along with topics for Essay, Elocution and Debate are given in the Programme schedule.
    18. For Elocution and Debate competition, use of any Prop of any kind or form is not allowed.
    19. Decision of the judges shall be final and binding for all. NO COUNTER QUESTION IN THIS REGARD SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.

    5. For ‘Sit & Draw’ Groups VI & VII (i.e. from class VII to X) Medium: Pencil / Pen / Pastels / Charcoal / Watercolor. Specific topic shall be given on the spot from the following:
        Group VI (VII & VIII)
      1. My Cultural Heritage
      2. Urban Landscape.
      3. Thirsty Earth.
        Group VII (IX & X)
      1. Folk art of your choice.
      2. Darkened neighbourhoods (Draw a neighborhood plunged into darkness during a power cut, with families gathered by candlelight, underscoring the challenges posed by load shedding).
      3. Memories of Generations (Illustrate a nostalgic scene of a child enjoying a vacation with their grandparents, capturing the warmth and wisdom passed down through generations).

    1. For Vocal music competition, competitor has to sing from selected songs only in 4 (four) minutes times (selected songs are available in our website).
    2. Accompaniment should be restricted to Harmonium, Tabla and Tanpura. The authority will not provide any accompanist.

    1. For the speakers time allotted will be 4 (Four) minutes; at the end of 3rd (Third) minute a warning bell will ring followed by the final bell.
    2. Reading out from prepared paper shall render the candidate ineligible for any prize.
    3. Decision of the judges shall be final for all purpose and no counter-question shall be entertained in this regard.

  • a. For Essay Competition, the length of the essay will be limited to not more than One Thousand words to be written in one hour's time.
    b. Participants should report at the venue, atleast 15 minutes before commencement.

    1. The leaders of the treasury bench and opposition to initiate the debate with their views. Time allotted to each of them is 6(six) minutes. At the end of 5th minute a warning bell will sound followed by the final bell at sixth minute by which time the speaker must conclude the speech.
    2. For other speakers time allotted will be 4(Four) minutes; at the end of 3rd minute a warning bell will ring followed by the final bell.
    3. Reading out from prepared speech shall liable the participant ineligible for any prize. However, a participant may use pen & paper for writing down the points for counter argument.
    4. The leaders of the Treasury & Opposition will get another chance towards close of the debate to sum-up/conclude the debate within another two minutes of time. (No marks for conclusion)
    5. Competitors are to submit their names in pairs for Quiz and Debate competition.
    6. Decision of the judges shall be final and binding for all. NO COUNTER QUESTION IN THIS REGARD SHALL BE ENTERTAINED.
